While some of the answers to this question are obvious, there are also some not-so-obvious answers that you may not have thought of.
Don’t we all want a clean living or work environment? But often cleaning can be hazardous to your health if you use cleaning products with harmful chemicals.
Most of us don’t give a second thought to the toxic chemicals that we surround ourselves with everyday, we inherently trust that multinational chemical companies have our best interests at heart. But do they?
Most of us are not even be aware that every day we are polluting your home when we clean. Try this: check the ingredients posted on the side or back of regular cleaners. I can guarantee that you will see many allergy and cancer causing ingredients listed. I urge you to research these chemicals and see the harmful health effects they’ve been connected with.
The Average American Uses about 25 Gallons of toxic, hazardous chemical products per year in their home… A major portion of these can be found in household cleaning products.
—”Prosperity Without Pollution,” by Joel S. Hirschorn and Kirsten V. Oldenburg, 1991
We use cleaning products on furniture, carpet floors, tile floors, counter tops, window sills and are used in every room in the house. The entire household is exposed and left to the mercy of whatever ingredients are in the cleaning product. What kind of household do you want your family to live in, a toxic or non-toxic?
Here’s the good news: organic cleaning products have a long list of advantages over their chemical-based counterparts.
By using organic cleaners, you can rid your home of chemical cleaner ingredients and free your house from cleaning based toxins. Organic cleaning products are safe because they do not contain harsh chemicals that will affect your breathing, damage your skin, and can affect your lungs if you breathe in any toxic vapors while cleaning.
The toxic chemicals in household cleaners are three times more likely to cause cancer than air pollution.
– Environmental Protection Agency report in 1985
One fact that no one can deny: asthma cases are increasing every year and several scientific studies have found that exposure to the chemicals found in household cleaning products may be to blame.
There is a particular form of asthma that we know is caused by environmental contaminants called extrinsic asthma. Why not create a safer home environment for everyone to breathe in by using organic cleaning products? Non-toxic, organic cleaners are safer to use around kids, family members, neighbors, and lets not forget our pets!
Asthma sufferers aren’t the only ones that benefit from organic cleaning – people with allergies benefit as well, if not more. In many cases you can completely eliminate illness, or at least cut down significantly on illness by going organic. Organic products are better to use in your home for health reasons AND they are also better for the environment. What other benefits do you need to switch over?
One of the biggest issues with chemical-based cleaners is many contain abrasives. These harsh abrasives will damage the surfaces of counters and slowly remove the protective finish over time. Even granite countertops can be affected!
Another problem with chemical cleaners is when you’re finished using a chemical cleaning product, the toxicity can stay on your counters, tubs and toilet for several hours if not longer before evaporating. In come cases it doesn’t evaporate completely and you are left with a 24/7 layer of chemicals in your house.
More than 7 million accidental poisonings occur each year, with more than 75% involving children under age 6!

That’s enough negative news, let’s get to the good news!
I know one of the first questions people have is “ok, but will organic cleaners work as well as their chemical counterparts”? Valid question indeed. In most cases, organic cleaners can clean as well as, if not better than their chemical cleaner counterparts.
Here’s the best part: it’s cheaper to go organic as well! While there are a few more up-front costs with organic cleaning products, you don’t need to use as much and therefore they last much longer, lowering your cleaning costs in the long run.
And here it is, your top 5 list of the benefits of organic cleaning products:
- Toxic-free household
- Safe environment for kids, family, and pets
- Non-abrasive, will not damage countertops
- Cheaper than chemical cleaning in long run
- Work as well, if not better than, chemical cleaners
